How to use the roll a dice

    1. Choose how many dice to roll (1 to 20).
    2. Pick the type of dice: a normal six-sided die (d6) or a d4, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100.
    3. Tap Roll or press the space bar. The total and each die are shown, with your recent rolls underneath.

How fair is this dice roller?

flipj uses your browser's built-in cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), the same source browsers use for encryption keys. We also avoid "modulo bias", a subtle flaw where some results come up slightly more often than others. Every result is generated on your device, so nothing you enter is sent to us.

Physical dice are rarely perfect. Cheap dice with drilled pips can be slightly lighter on the 6 side, and plastic dice often have small air bubbles. A virtual die gives every face exactly the same chance.

    Odds with two six-sided dice

With one die, every number from 1 to 6 is equally likely. With two dice, totals in the middle are much more common because there are more ways to make them:

    • 7 is the most likely total: 6 ways out of 36 (16.7%).
    • 6 and 8: 5 ways each (13.9%).
    • 2 and 12 are the rarest: 1 way each (2.8%).

That's why 7 is so important in games like Monopoly and Catan.

Dice names: what does d20 mean?

Tabletop games describe dice by their number of sides. A d6 is a normal six-sided die, a d20 has twenty sides, and so on. "3d6" means roll three six-sided dice and add them up. A d100 (or percentile die) gives a number from 1 to 100.

    Questions

Can I roll more than one dice at once?

Yes, up to 20 dice. flipj shows each die and adds up the total.

What is the most common roll with two dice?

    7. It can be made 6 different ways out of 36, so it comes up about once every 6 rolls.

    Is it "dice" or "die"?

Traditionally "die" is one and "dice" is more than one, but "dice" is now widely used for both.
